Morning Musume (モーニング娘。)
A Japanese girl group that formed in 1997 on a talent show called ASAYAN, quickly became, and currently is, one of Japan's top all girl groups with a number of hit records and albums. Their combined CD and DVD sales exceed 21 million copies in Japan alone.
The group's name can be translated as Morning Daughter; as the name suggests, it consists of members mostly in their late adolescence and early 20s. The average age of the group members has remained more or less unchanged since its original formation because the group maintains a "school-like" system for their continuous line-up changes, with older members "graduating" and new, usually younger, members selected from nationwide auditions admitted to the group annually.

AKB48
A Japanese idol girl group, initially named after the Akihabara area of Tokyo where the group's theater is located, and their original roster of 48 members. As of May 2014, the group has expanded to include 140 members whose ages range from early teens to mid-20s.
The idea of AKB48's producer Yasushi Akimotowas to create a girl group that, unlike a regular pop group that gives occasional concerts and that is mostly seen on television, would have its own theater and perform there on a daily basis; the fans would always be able to go and see the girls live. The group is one of the highest-earning musical acts in Japan.
